Hurricane Tomas Chase Account:
Chase Account: When Hurricane Tomas came along I had already written off the 2010 the Hurricane Season. I was in South America filming storms and looking for my first South American tornado and decided I could not miss the last Hurricane of the season. I found the first flight back to Miami and from there decided to go to the Turks and Caicos. All the media coverage was in Haiti and I felt being in the small islands of the Turks and Caicos would be better and it was an excuse to go to a place I had heard a lot about. I was in the middle of a really bad flu and my immune system was low and with the Cholera epidemic going on in Haiti I decided it was too risky. I was not interested in filming flash floods but was looking to get into the best wind Tomas had to offer. The flight over to the Turks and Caicos was magical. The waters were turquoise and we flew over all the Bahamian islands on the way and I took many great photos. I arrived to very friendly people and dream-like beaches. Tomas was forecast to be a Cat-2 and the eastern eyewall was supposed to brush the island which would have put me in a situation to get some great shots. The final outcome was a Cat-1 Hurricane the jogged hard to the east which put us in the western eyewall and only gave us winds of around 45mph. Plus, Hurricane Tomas hit at night just as all the other hurricanes did for me in the 2010 season. Tomas was my 25 Hurricane landfall and probably provided the least amount of Hurricane video of them all. I hardly shot at all at night since there was really nothing to film other than some rain. Instead I made friends with a great group of people at "Jimmy's Dive Bar" who were having a Hurricane Party. I exchanged stories with the locals and at daybreak went out to get shots. The only thing to shoot was some minor street flooding and some small tree limbs knocked down. This was fine with me, I didn't want to see such a beautiful island get trashed. I spent the next 3 days taking "Postcard" photos of the island to send to my photo agents and soaking up some sun...I have been to many of the islands in the Caribbean and all are beautiful but Turks and Caicos are Magical ! Its a place that should be on everyone's "Bucket List"...
